UMP Holdings Sdn. Bhd. (UMPH), a prominent player in the BIM consultancy industry based in Pahang, Malaysia, has made significant strides in the construction sector with Autodesk’s innovative solutions provided by Bimage Consulting Malaysia. In today’s article, we focus on this case study of our client, UMPH, and their use of Autodesk tools in the Marine Engineering Polytechnic project in Bagan Datuk, while highlighting the transformative impact of Autodesk’s technology in the industry.

Overview of the project

The Marine Engineering Polytechnic project, a design and build initiative under Malaysia’s Public Work Department, involved UMPH as the BIM consultant. Their role encompassed leading, facilitating, and managing the entire BIM implementation process, including design development, construction, and as-built phases. The project included various components such as administration and academic blocks, shared facilities, and infrastructure works.

What were the challenges faced?

Initially, UMPH encountered typical construction industry challenges, such as BIM adoption and readiness issues, unclear scopes of work, and coordination problems between digital and physical activities. These challenges necessitated a robust solution to streamline processes and enhance collaboration.

How did Autodesk provide solutions?

Autodesk’s AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) Collection played a crucial role in helping UMPH achieve its project goals and adhere to project standards. Key Autodesk tools utilized included:

  • Revit, Civil 3D, and InfraWorks: These tools enabled seamless designing, integration with local standards, and the production of accurate as-built drawings. They also allowed for efficient material take-off and improved design visualization and documentation.
  • Navisworks Manage: This tool was instrumental for design review and coordination. It helped in visualizing and unifying design and construction data, resolving clash and interference problems, and facilitating team collaboration.

Achievements and Benefits

UMPH successfully executed several key BIM objectives, such as facilitating design review processes, managing client expectations through 3D visualization, minimizing conflicts at the construction site, and enhancing facility management systems. The adoption of a Common Data Environment (CDE) further streamlined the project lifecycle, ensuring efficient information sharing and collaboration among multidisciplinary teams.
